A Wet Ride To Work Today

Well, it is the day that I (and many others who question my decision to go car-free) have been waiting for.  It is the first day that there has been inclement weather on my ride from the ‘T’ Station into work.  I made sure to put on my rain jacket/shell as well as grab my rain pants and put them in my bag.  It wasn’t raining on my way to the T station near my apartment and when I got off, it was only a very light rain.  As I walked to my bike I said to myself, “Self. You have a great pair of rain pants in your bag, but its not raining that hard..lets skip putting them on today.”  OOPS!!!  Worst! Decision! Ever!  By the time I got to work, my pants were soaked.  Add to that the fact that I have been procrastinating putting my rear fender on my bike to mitigate splash from the rear tire.  When I got into work I had to change out of my pants and wear my (dry) rain pants around the station and in my edit bay all night.  Live and learn.  I also learned that brakes on a bike take a lot more time to grip when they are wet.  I am glad I did a test break before having to have the need to stop.  It took me longer than I thought.  At least that was a decision I am glad I made.  When I go home tonight, I will make sure to wear both rain jacket AND rain pants and I will install the rear fender during my dinner break.  Happy biking:-)

Fenders are one of the best, and the worst, inventions in the history of cycling. The front fender creates some toe-overlap issues, and, if it’s a cheap one, or poorly installed, it can fold into the tire and crash the bike, if you hit it just wrong. Ask me know I know this… A good or at least decent alternative, if you haven’t mounted yours already, is a rear cargo rack, with stuff on it.

Also, Seattle cyclists love wool. It’s still warm, even when it’s soaked with water. If rain pants wind up being too warm (eg you still get wet, but from perspiration rather than rain) give a pair of merino leggings a try. It’s amazing how well they tolerate the rain.
