I am a professional photographer and I currently drive 42 miles each way to work. This doesn’t take into account all the driving I do while I am at work. We currently live within walking distance to the MBTA Commuter Rail station in Providence, but my place of employment is not convent to the commuter rail. I am left to put 20,000 miles on my car a year just for getting to and from work every day and I have been doing this for over 5 years. At first the drive wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad. Due to when I worked I didn’t hit rush hour traffic all that often, so most of my commuting miles were on un-clogged Interstate 95 moving at a nice 65/70 miles-per-hour. After 5 years of doing the drive, it is starting to wear on me big time. I have also left work late at night, exhausted after a long day, dreading the hour long drive home. As we all know, it is not at all safe to drive when you are exhausted. There are a few nights I have even gotten a hotel room near work just because I was too tired to safely drive home.
This might be reason number one of why I am making this change and moving. I want to eliminate as much of my commute as possible while still living in a downtown urban environment. Besides all the miles I will save on my car (no more 42 miles each way) and all the gas, maintenance, and wear and tear on my car (don’t get me started) that is bad for the environment and my wallet, I will also save the wear and tear on myself eliminating most of the 2 hours I spend a day commuting. I can’t WAIT!!!
